Every morning I get up, shuffle towards the kitchen, prepare some white or green tea and sit down to do my morning scanning of blogs. Now this has become my getting-started-routine. I sit on the kitchens sofa and read photographer´s blogs like others read the morning paper. I LOVE it. It´s my way to get going, to get inspired and focused. So one of the blogs I check really almost daily is the one from Katelyn! She is the owner of Katelyn James Photography and is simply beyond awesome!!! 

I came across her blog because one day many months ago Katelyn interviewed Sarah from Ampersand Photography, which I wrote about last week. Katelyn is unbelievable. She is super fun, super excited and simply draws you in! I believe she has this ability to put herself into each post she writes, to brag about her couples and to share all the creativity going on under her red hair. She cheers you on from afar! Yes isn´t that incredible?!?! She´s not even living on my continent and I feel cheered on when I go back to her blog! How does she do it? Besides all the many posts about her couple/portrait sessions and her amazing weddings, she keeps posting very regularly in other categories! And THIS is wildly interesting for photographers like me.

Jeden Morgen steh ich auf, schlurfe Richtung Küche, mache mir wahlweise einen weißen oder einen grünen Tee und setze mich auf das Küchensofa um Blogs zu durchforsten. Das ist in den letzten Wochen und Monaten meine Morgenroutine geworden. Mein Start in den Tag. Ich lese Fotografenblogs wie andere die Zeitung lesen. Und ich LIEBE es! Es ist meine Art um loszulegen, aufzutanken, inspiriert zu werden und mich auf den Tag vorzubereiten. Einer der Blogs die ich wirklich fast täglich besuche ist der von Katelyn! Ihr gehört das Unternehmen, Katelyn James Photography und sie ist einfach großartig! Auf sie aufmerksam bin ich durch Sarah von Ampersand Photography geworden. Katelyn ist total witzig, sehr aufgedreht und zieht einen einfach in Ihren Bann. Ich glaube sie hat diese Fähigkeit sich selbst in ihre Posts zu schütten, sie prahlt über ihre Paare und gibt viel von all der Kreativität unter dem roten Schopf. Sie feuert dich an aus der Ferne. Ist das nicht unglaublich?!?! Sie lebt nicht mal auf meinem Kontinent und dennoch fühle ich mich angespornt durch sie! Wie macht sie das nur? Neben den vielen Posts über Paar- und Portraitsessions und ihren fantastischen Hochzeiten, schreibt sie noch regelmäßig in einigen anderen Kategorien. Und DAS ist höchst interessant für Photographen wie mich!

Under the Tuscan sun

After handing in my first Italian paper – yes ITALIAN - it was time to go out and get some of this Tuscan sun! My roommate Alba and I went to one of our canteens and searched for a nice spot under olive trees. With a panorama at our feet and two books in our labs. While resting and soaking in the warm air we were listening to a symphony out of a cello lesson in the palazzo behind the garden, dogs barking and one of the sienaese drum bands practicing on the streets. Our sweet life.

Unter der Sonne der Toskana

Nachdem ich heute meine allererste italienische Hausarbeit – ja ITALIENISCHE - eingereicht hatte war es an der Zeit endlich raus zu gehen und etwas von dieser toskanischen Sonne zu tanken. Meine Zimmermitbewohnerin Alba und ich gingen zu einer unserer Mensen und suchten einen netten Platz unter Olivenbäumen. Mit dem Panorama zu unseren Füßen und zwei Büchern in unseren Händen. Während wir die Seele baumeln ließen lauschten wir der Symphonie aus einer Cellostunde aus dem Palast hinter dem Garten, Hundegebelle und dem Üben einer der Sienesischen Trommelband. Unser süßes Leben.

I attract babies.

There you have it! Last week it hit me! I attract babies. They crash into the window of my office, crush-land on my breakfast table, or take refuge on my doorstep. Till last week I thought it might just be a phenomena which occurs in Germany. But no, hello, it happened in my beloved Tuscany as well.

I was just heading home from university and about to step into my house, when I spotted a tiny black dirt ball on the doorstep. Now this was peculiar, I took a close look and excluded doggy poop from my examination, you have to know this place is full of it and I would have gotten quite angry if one of these tiny Italian dogs would have left it at my door step. So what was it? I was bending down, it seemed to be a being more than a thing and there! It was a baby bat!!!!! I was soooo shocked to find a bat in broad day light, or a bat at all, if you will, that I had to keep myself from squeaking. Not of horror, but of joy. REALLY! I have never seen a bat to freaking close and I was freakin thrilled. Ever since I did a project on bats in sixth grade, they fascinate me. I don´t care if you think they are ugly or scary. Let me assure you, they are not! I think they were totally misused to create fear in way to many stories. If there was one thing I saw, this little guy of a dirt ball was freaking scared of anything which surrounded him and in no way scary.

Sunday´s are for listening

I met this little guy at a wedding in 2007 in Germany. He was most fascinated and not at all afraid of the carriage horses. Shortly after this photo he shared his dream of becoming a doctor with me. Ever since then this is one of my favorite kids pictures ever. 

Sometimes it´s good to take some time to listen, be it a gigantic horse´s heart or your own!

Sonntage sind zum zuhören da!

Ich habe diesen kleinen Gentleman auf einer Hochzeit 2007 in Deutschland kennen gelernt. Er war höchst fasziniert von den riesigen Kutschpferden. Kurz nachdem das Bild entstand erzählte er mir von seinem Traum eines Tages Tierarzt zu werden.

Manchmal ist es gut zu zuhören, sei es dem Herzschlag eines gigantischen Pferdes oder deinem eignen!

Pinterest? What? Ah, where to start?! Pinterest is just like the most awesome playing tool for all the photographers/creative minds out there ever! Honestly, it´s awesome! You can basically make collages and collections of pictures but on an online basis. It´s way less glue on your hands. So what usually happens is, you browse blogs and online magazines and every now and then (or more often) you come across pictures you would love to file and organize somewhere. Right? This is what happened to me constantly! So here it is! Your pin board! To share and organize as you wish. Ever since I started to pin I became a little addictive (maybe) there you have it. Haha. I really do enjoy spending time there, browsing pics, searching for inspiration, collecting ideas for photo shoots. So here is what I recommend to you, if you are in any way in the creative business.

Pinterest? Waaas? Ah, wo beginne ich am besten?! Pinterest is so ziemlich das liebste moderne Spielzeug der Fotografen/ Kreativen Köpfe unserer Zeit. Wirklich! Es ist unglaublich. Du kannst im Prinzip Kollagen und Bildersammlungen online erstellen. Und deine Hände kleben weniger dabei ;-). Mir ist es regelmäßig so gegangen das wenn ich gerade Blogs oder Onlinemagazine durchwühle das man öfter auf Bilder stößt die einem gefallen und man denkst sich, Mensch die hätte ich so gerne irgendwo gespeichert und organisiert. Hier ist es! Deine Pinnwand! Etwas zum teilen und arrangieren wie es dir beliebt. Seit dem ich mit dem „pinnen“ angefangen habe bin ich (vielleicht) ein wenig abhängig geworden. Haha, da hast du´s.  Es macht mir wirklich sehr großen Spaß etwas Zeit auf der Seite zu verbringen, Bilder und Boards zu durchwühlen, nach Inspiration zu suchen und den nächsten Photo shoot zu planen. Also, solltest du in irgend einer weise im kreativen Business tätig sein, ist dies eine Seite dir ich dir nur empfehlen kann.

Tea reloaded

One of the little things I truly miss about the student life in Germany are all these small cafés, made for students, run by students. These tiny getaways right around the corner. Where you just hang out and do nothing but sharing time or listening. I guess it´s because Germans are better with creating indoor coziness. Don´t get me wrong, there are some truly awesome places everywhere, but I still think Germans are better in creating that feel – which is totally out of a necessity. The weather is simply not that awesome as in Tuscany all the time! As simple as that. To my utmost joy I came across the place of places in Siena some time ago and since the first day I set my tiny leather boot on the red cobble stone I had this urgent wish to run wild with my camera. Ok, it could have been wilder, but here is my little love letter for the “Tearoom”.  My recommended backgroundmusic.

Eins der wenigen Dinge, die ich tatsächlich von meinem deutschen Studentenleben vermisse, sind all diese kleinen Cafés, für Studenten, von Studenten. Diese niedlichen Oasen gleich um die Ecke. Wo man einfach nur zum relaxen, plaudern und zuhören hingeht. Ich vermute es liegt daran das die Deutschen besser darin sind, dieses Flair zu kreieren. Versteh mich nicht falsch, es gibt ganz wunderbare Minioasen an sehr vielen Orten, jedoch denke ich das es den Deutschen etwas mehr liegt – aus einer gewissen Notwendigkeit heraus. Das Wetter ist einfach nicht ständig so sagenhaft umwerfend wie in der Toskana. Da hast du´s. Zu meiner übergroßen Freude bin ich schon vor einiger Zeit über den chilligsten Ort, der chilligsten Orte in Siena gestolpert. Seit dem ersten Tag, als mein kleiner Lederstiefel, die roten Kopfsteine betrat wollte ich dort mit meiner Kamera durchgehen (run wild). Natürlich hätte es etwas durchgedrehter sein können, aber hier ist meine Liebeserklärung an den „Tearoom“. Meine kleine Musikempfehlung.

Portrait session with Yoko

Since September I share this nice apartment in the city center of Siena with four girls. Now this might sound horrible for some of you, but in reality it´s just fun and we get along surprisingly well. Our fun mix of nationalities is made of two Italians, one Catalan, one Japanese and one German. Sadly just now the time for Yoko has come to move on. As usual, way too soon. But I did not want to let her go before a little Session with her. So here is the first Asian Session ever! I loved it! Thank you Yoko for the fun time! I took her to one of my favorite places in Siena. A private garden not ten minutes away from our house. We were strolling around, greeting the donkey (Yes, my friends a donkey in the city center) and rolling on the new grown, spring scented grass. ~ Enjoy!!

Seit September teile ich eine Wohnung in der Mitte von Siena mit fünf Mädels. Was sich jetzt vielleicht für den ein oder anderen wie ein Albtraum anhört ist für uns jedoch jede Menge Spaß. Unsere bunte WG Mischung von Nationalitäten besteht aus zwei Italienerinnen, einer Katalanin, einer Japanerin und einer Deutschen. Leider muss Yoko uns schon bald verlassen, viel zu früh, wie so oft. Allerding wollte ich sie nicht gehen lassen, ohne vorher eine kleine Session mit Ihr zu machen. Also hab ich die Freude heute meine allererste asiatische Session mit euch zu teilen. Mir hat es super gut gefallen. Danke Yoko für die entspannte Zeit! Ich habe sie an einen meiner Lieblingsorte in Siena entführt. Ein privater Garten nicht einmal zehn Minuten von unserem Haus entfernt. Wie sind dort rumgestromert, haben den Esel begrüßt (ja ein Esel meine Freunde, in der Stadtmitte) und sind auf dem nach Frühling riechenden Gras rumgerollt. ~ Enjoy!!

Every now and then people ask me since when I photograph. It´s kind of hard to fix it on a precise day or time. I got my first camera from my Dady when I turned thirteen or fourteen. So since that I had the highest demand for film in the entire family. Then after one of his travels my father brought home a  digital SLR and it pretty much started from there. I was more often behind than in front of the lens. But since when did I take it more serious? I can tell you pretty precisely. It was during the last spring break in April 2011 I browsed a lot online and through a common friend on Facebook I stumbled across an amazing girl. I saw her profile picture and new, she has the eye for beauty!  -Checked out her blog and fell in love. I loved her work, her style, her writing. So within some days I pretty much soaked in every post there was. I started to check out her fellow photographer friends and I never again stopped reading her posts. I started dreaming big! It was the first time, I had the feeling,  `I could do it´. She worked her way up, she did it. She is awesome. I could do it. I silently kept this thought to myself. Then one evening in May a new found friend, who had not seen more than five pictures, told me. Rici, why not do it?! You could be a photographer! From then on I have traveled my own road of photography. I tried to read more and practice more and this is what I would like to share with you today. I made this decision to read a couple of photography blogs daily. This will be part two – behind the lens.

So today I would like to share with you my very first inspiration: Ampersand Photography! It´s owned by this amazing girl with the eye for beauty. Sarah Danaher. She is awesome! Besides being a great photographer, she is also a believer in God. She shares her thoughts and doubts on her blog. I truly admire her elegant way of intertwining her believe with her work.  So check out her blog! She is my inspiration.

Gelegentlich werde ich gefragt seit wann ich eigentlich fotografiere. Das ist eine schwer zu beantwortende Frage, da es sich schwer auf einen Tag oder eine Zeit festlegen lässt. Meine erste eigene Kamer hab ich von meinem Dady als ich so dreizehn, vierzehn wurde. Seit dem hatte ich den höchsten Verschleiß an Filmen in der Familie. Dann, nach eine Reise, brachte mein Dady eine digitale Spiegelreflexkamera mit nach Hause. Somit begann es also. Von da an war ich mehr hinter als vor der Kamera. Aber von welchem Zeitpunkt an begann ich es ernster zu nehmen?  Das kann ich wiederum ziemlich genau sagen. Es war in der letzten Frühlingspause als ich etwas mehr freie Zeit hatte und so durch Facebook surfe. Da wurde ich durch eine gemeinsame Freundin auf das Profilbild von einer jungen Frau aufmerksam. Ich sah nur dieses eine Bild und wusste, sie hat den Blick für Schönheit! Also hab ich gleich darauf ihren Blog angeschaut und mich verliebt. In ihre Arbeit, ihren Style, ihr Schreiben. Innerhalb von wenigen Tagen hab ich ihren fast ihren kompletten Blog in mich auch gesogen. Ich begann ihre Fotografenfreunde „aus zu checken“ und ich hab seither nicht mehr aufgehört  ihren Blog zu lesen. Ich begann groß zu träumen. Es war das erste Mal das ich das Gefühl hatte, Ich könnte es schaffen. Sie hat sich hochgearbeitet, sie hat´s geschafft. Sie ist unglaublich. Ich könnte es schaffen. Jedoch behielt ich diese Gedanken für mich. Als dann eine neuer Freund im Mai zu mir sagte. Hey warum machst du das nicht?! Du kannst ein Fotograf sein!  Seit dem bin ich auf meiner eigenen Straße der Photography gereist. Ich habe versucht immer mehr zu lesen und zu üben. Und das ist es, was ich heute mit dir teilen möchte. Ich habe die Entscheidung getroffen jeden Tag einige Fotografen-Blogs zu lesen. Das ist der zweite Teil von `Behind the lens“ /Hinter der Linse.

Heute möchte ich mit dir meine aller erste Inspiration teilen: Ampersand Photgraphy. Es ist ein Fotostudio was Sarah Danaher gehört. Sie ist umwerfend. Abgesehen davon, dass sie eine echt tolle Fotografin ist, glaubt sie auch an Gott. Sie teilt darüber auch ihre Gedanken und Zweifel auf dem Blog und ich bewundere Ihre Art. Schau mal auf ihrem Blog vorbei, sie ist meine Inspiration!
