Portrait session ~ Conny

“"The best color in the whole world, is the one that looks good, on you!”

 Coco Chanel

It was Friday at lunch. We had just giggled over the last joke and munched down some of our thai food, as Conny mentioned this one big fine tree. She had seen it on her way into the city. Sitting on one very green lawn surrounded by just green trees. A super magnificent yellow autumn beauty. As soon as she mentioned it, it sounded like the most perfect place to end our session. We finished our delish rice and strolled through some narrow streets before heading to the park. Oh my heart could not have asked for a better place, a better tree, or better light. It was perfection topped off with a very gorgeous Conny.

Maybe I went a little wild, laughed and galloped (I think running is lame) around her like crazy… till a nearing haymaking machinery (yes) forced me to let Conny know of the vehicle. And she thought I made a joke.
Thank you for this fun afternoon!!

An apartment in Roma

It was this one week in February. One day I had called my Mom and told her that by the same time tomorrow I would be in town. I took a train, from Siena/ Tuscany to the middle of Germany, sat still for seventeen hours and as my Dad picked me up from the train station I was more than ready to go home. I had not been home for quite a while since last Christmas was my first one overseas.

It was due. I needed home. This was the same week her first mail arrived. She asked me if I were in Siena at the end of the week. She wanted to meet me and have a café. She sounded friendly. Sweet. But you have to know I never met Amy before. She had read a comment I had made on her wedding, which was photographed by Sarah (Ampersand Photography) and was curious. She found my Blog, liked it and decided to ask for a meeting. I was overjoyed! And in the wrong place.

Over the weekend I had a short visit from Germany and because we were in the fortunate situation of a car, we took our Sunday and drove all the way to Cinque Terre. It was wonderful, filled with windy roads through the rough back country, lovely chatter in the car and infinite happy glimpses of blue and tiny colored houses.

Say what you want! Yesterday was golden dust in the air! Oh yes! And I ran around to catch some. With my lens of course.
~ Enjoy.

Sunday´s are for seeing the tiny things.
Today I decided to focus on the small and tiny things, to savor life, to focus on the things given to me. To forget the unhappy moments, moments which drive me nuts, moments where nothing seems to work, or the world is clashing miraculously above my head. Because, yes, these moments exist. I started reading a new book “One Thousand Gifts” from Ann Voskamp and it challenges the reader to see little gifts of life in every situation, where ever you are, whatever your story might be. So here is a little Sunday list of my own.
For the sake of readjusting my focus.

At the edge

I am still dreaming back to this tiny place. An small oasis where I did not expect it. And all because my brother decided to leave the road, to climb the rocks and choose a way through the wilderness where there was none. I should thank him (again). I was basically struck with awe, by this tiny spot. On the edge. On top of a valley, overlooking my beloved Tuscany.  We climbed the cross and just sat there, took it in. I was constantly scared to death by the minuscule space left to the edge. Now, looking back, I am freaking glad we had a little tiny portrait session with Hanna, a friend from Germany.  I hope you enjoy the outlook the same way as I do!

Have a fabulous week!

Sunday´s are for sitting at the cross

...  to think, pray, reflect, question, forgive and marvel. And to take in the rough valley at your feet.

One day afar from this world

More precisely: one day afar from my world.

Every time I visit my home town Jena, a visit to my good and lovely friend and her family is always an absolute must. Already two years ago my friend welcomed a tiny human life in this world. Incredibly cute, her very fist son. As I entered the door this time her firstborn eyed me critically, then pointed his finger in my direction and said softly “So beautifuuul!” WOW, I was overwhelmed, what a greeting!! Two years before I remember going to the clinic the first day of his tiny life, holding him in my arms and now he is already paying compliments! Every visit is amazing and every single time I am shocked how quick the kids can grow! Every time I admire my friend for being so relaxed and I marvel at her beauty during motherhood and how she simply embraces and loves every tiny minute of it. Did I mention kids? Yes, eight weeks ago she gave birth to a new “cuddle bear”. For me this microcosm of a young family has something downright fascinating. The rest of the world is forgotten, does not matter and is utterly unimportant. Cradling the bundle in my arms I realize there is a different perspective for life. And I am determined to remember this, every time life seems too big or too overwhelming, that my perspective is not always everything, not always right and not always as important. Every time I close the door after I hugged the kids goodbye I leave with this feeling in my stomach, that Life really is beautiful. :)

On the way

On the way to Rome...
I made a wild u-turn as I saw the amazing colors the sun was bathing the sky in, and let my Mom know, we neeeed to stop.
Loved it!

Another lovely Sunday spent in Tuscany. But no, this one was different. Together with four Catalan/Spanish girls we rented a car and drove to one of these tiny, hidden, secret in the middle of nowhere thermal springs. To get or own share of foul-egg smelling but healing water. Yes this good-for-your-skin kind of springs can have a weird smell. Honestly? It was wonderful. We occupied our own little tub, changed basins (each has a different temperature) got loads of sun. And what better highlight of the relaxing girls kind of Sunday can there be, than to get offered some private mud from some kind elderly man?! We were trying to imitate the Italians, rubbing some of the dirt in their faces, as he kindly offered his own mud from a Tupperware to us. Yes, you can actually rub that in your face, it will make your skin glowing like diamonds, promise. :) So much for face masks in public places and with strangers. I did not take any pictures (with my camera) of the face rubs, sorry. You have to trust me on that one. Or come and see for yourself. Middle of Tuscany: Termi di Petriolo.

Under the Tuscan sun

After handing in my first Italian paper – yes ITALIAN - it was time to go out and get some of this Tuscan sun! My roommate Alba and I went to one of our canteens and searched for a nice spot under olive trees. With a panorama at our feet and two books in our labs. While resting and soaking in the warm air we were listening to a symphony out of a cello lesson in the palazzo behind the garden, dogs barking and one of the sienaese drum bands practicing on the streets. Our sweet life.

I attract babies.

There you have it! Last week it hit me! I attract babies. They crash into the window of my office, crush-land on my breakfast table, or take refuge on my doorstep. Till last week I thought it might just be a phenomena which occurs in Germany. But no, hello, it happened in my beloved Tuscany as well.

I was just heading home from university and about to step into my house, when I spotted a tiny black dirt ball on the doorstep. Now this was peculiar, I took a close look and excluded doggy poop from my examination, you have to know this place is full of it and I would have gotten quite angry if one of these tiny Italian dogs would have left it at my door step. So what was it? I was bending down, it seemed to be a being more than a thing and there! It was a baby bat!!!!! I was soooo shocked to find a bat in broad day light, or a bat at all, if you will, that I had to keep myself from squeaking. Not of horror, but of joy. REALLY! I have never seen a bat to freaking close and I was freakin thrilled. Ever since I did a project on bats in sixth grade, they fascinate me. I don´t care if you think they are ugly or scary. Let me assure you, they are not! I think they were totally misused to create fear in way to many stories. If there was one thing I saw, this little guy of a dirt ball was freaking scared of anything which surrounded him and in no way scary.

March 2, 2012

For almost two weeks I escaped for a little vacation to Germany. I hungered to see my family and friends. So this was my time.  I am sorry for the lack of posts but to make it up to you I invite you to breathe some German spring air with me. I met two friends of mine last Saturday. Partly surprise, party planned visit and we just had one of these amazing, let´s talk, going from Café to Café, stroll in  the renaissance park, kind of day. It was wonderful, it was uplifting, like a one day escape from work, university, worries. And we laughed. We always do that. Like crazy. Till our stomachs ache… So in case you heard us in the “Residenzpark” in Würzburg, don´t worry we are gone again. Hihi.

~~~
Für fast zwei Wochen bin ich für einen kurzen Urlaub nach Deutschland davon gedüst. Ich habe mich sehr danach gesehnt endlich meine Familie und Freunde mal wieder zu sehen. Also ich entschuldige mich für die mangelnden Blogposts und um es wieder gut zu machen, lade ich dich ein, ein wenig deutsche Frühlingsluft mit mir zu schnuppern. Letzten Samstag verbrachte ich mit zwei Freunden. Zum Teil war das eine Überraschung, zum Teil geplant. Es war ein unglaublich schöner, ungeplanter, einer von diesen, lass uns plaudern, von einem Café zum nächsten schlendern, in den Residenzpark gehen,  - Tag. Es war wunderbar, es war erbaulichen, es war eine Minioase zwischen Arbeit, Uni und Sorgen. Und wir haben gelacht. Das machen wir immer, wie verrückt und besonders ausführlich. Bis uns die Bäuche wehtun. Also wenn du uns letzte Woche im Residenzpark in Würzburg gehört hast, keine Sorge, wir sind wieder weg. Hihi.
Ok, may I add, I LOVE this scarf!!
Ok, darf ich kurz einwerfen? Ich LIEBE diesen Schal!!!
Some enchanted bath
As I have already hinted at, this is a particularly quiet time in Siena. Maybe it is due to the fact that we have exam session at the university right now. Yeah. So I figured what other people might do around this time of the year, is they dream where to travel to in the summer. Short; plan their vacation.  I thought I spice it up a little with some sweet idea of my own. Ok, you got me this might be some Rici´s excuse to share travel pictures. But anyway, if you travel to Tuscany any time soon, let me know we can set up some nice outdoor shooting together!!! Sooo looking forward to spring in Tuscany. So here are some of my favorites from a tiny little thermal bath, in an even tinier little village somewhere in the rural mountains of Tuscany. The city piazza is basically a pool. Yes, you read that right! So they built the city center´s pool on top of a hot spring and it´s said to have healing powers. Of course it has! Sadly it´s forbidden to take a dip in the healing pool… anyway you can dangle your feet and hands into some cute streams outside the tiny village centre and enjoy the healing there. It´s lovely you should try it! If you follow the healing streams running down the hills you will find more of the natural pools, which is simply Tuscan awesomeness!!!!
~ Enjoy!
PS, oh, the enchanted little place is called: Bagno Vignoni
~~~

Sunset with Snow

This is a very quiet time of the year, even more so with the winter, snow, cold, surprise in Tuscany. Therefore I have some quiet sunset with Snow pictures and warm greetings from my Tuscan just semi warm kitchen ;-).

~ Happy Thursday! Saluti.

Snow in Siena

It started late in the evening and my roomy was looking at me with joyous eyes. Rici, if it´s still snowing after we finished our movie, we should go out for a walk. So shortly after midnight we left our palazzo in the middle of town. Shouts and screams greeted us on the street and before short we found ourselves in a city square filled snow ball fights. This was too good. After my roommate defeated all the other exchange students (proud of her) we continued our walk to the dome. Taking in it´s peaceful, soulless sight.  The magical atmosphere was not over yet – next morning the whole town was sliding, rolling and squeaking about this surprise visit. Ok, not the whole town, kids, dogs, but I may report, some adults as well… And then finally I was confirmed of my long lasting presumption! Every town square (piazza) should have a steep slope! No, honestly! Every town should have one! Simply best thing ever!!

~~~
Es begann spät in der Nacht und meine Mitbewohnerin schaute mich mit erwartungsvollen Augen an. Rici, wenn es immer noch schneit wenn wir den Film zu Ende geschaut haben, dann müssen wir rausgehen. Somit haben wir kurz nach Mitternacht unseren Palazzo verlassen. Schon auf der Straße wurden wir von freudigen Rufen gegrüßt und kurz darauf fanden wir uns auf dem Piazza in einer einzigen Schneeballschlacht wieder. Das war einfach zu gut! Nachdem meine Zimmernachbarin alle anderen Austauschstudenten besiegt hatte (bin stolz auf sie) führten wir unseren Spaziergang Richtung Dom fort. Diese verwunschene Atmosphäre war jedoch noch nicht vorbei. Am nächsten Morgen war die ganze Stadt am rutschen, kullern und vergnügten quieken. Ok, vielleicht nicht die ganze Stadt, aber alle Kinder, Hunde und ich darf auch den ein oder anderen Ausgewachsenen hin zu fügen. Zu guter Letzt wurde ich in einer meiner schon immer und sehr lang gehegten Vermutungen bestätigt. Jede Stadt sollte auf dem Marktplatz einen kleinen „Hang“ haben den man im Fall das es schneien sollte vereint hinunter rutschen kann. Wirklich ich hab es schon immer geahnt, aber das hat es übertroffen! Zu gut!!
I told you there was a wild snow ball fight! See all these??? Ok, I admit, snowflakes...
